Powerful Protection against Identity Fraud
All Fellowes shredders offer powerful protection against identity fraud for your home and your business. As the global leader in paper shredder design and engineering, you can be confident that our machines offer you the highest quality shredders on the market. Which is why they are known as the "World's Toughest Shredders."™
Why Shred?
"Bin raiders" are taking advantage of our carelessness, lax security and "it won't happen to me" attitudes. Today, Australian households and businesses are making it too easy for criminals to obtain information from both companies and individuals by simply searching business and household waste.
By investing in a shredder for your home or your office, you can help to protect your identity. Use a confetti cut shredder and always shred anything containing personal or confidential information before you throw it away. Want to know more? Click here to find the right shredder for your needs and help stop identity fraud.
What to Shred?
Anything containing personal data provides information about you that bin raiders can use to steal your identity. Be Safe; Shred It.
- Bank statements
- Credit card slips
- Utility bills
- Mobile phone bills
- Purchase receipts
- Cash point receipts
- Credit cards
- CDs and DVDs with personal or sensitive data
- Even junk mail - anything that contains your name and address

ABOUT CRIME STOPPERS IN AUSTRALIA
Crime Stoppers has been operating its 1800 333 000 freecall number in Australia since 1987. People can call in anonymously with information about criminals or crimes that have been committed. This information is then captured by police and passed onto detectives.
Operating throughout Australia, Crime Stoppers has become an integral part of policing with the information gathered and supplied by the community essential to crime fighting. Crime Stoppers also plays a key role in crime prevention, for example supporting Fellowes in the campaign empowering people to protect themselves from becoming a victim of Identity Fraud.
Callers to Crime Stoppers are never asked for their details, their calls are never recorded or traced and no record is kept of the caller's gender or ethnicity. This makes Crime Stoppers unique and allows people an invaluable opportunity to play a proactive role in making their communities safer.
More than 1 million people have called Crime Stoppers in Australia.
Anyone may have information that is relevant to Crime Stoppers. Callers can be casual passers-by who may have observed a crime or criminal activity in the street or workplace but very often they are those living in close proximity. These people are often much too afraid to go to the police, fearing for their own safety and that of their families. They know that if it were to come out that they had given information, there could be serious repercussions for them. Crime Stoppers solves this problem and allows them to take direct action without fear of reprisals.
Crime Stoppers works in partnership with the community, local business, the media and the police to get criminals off the streets and make our community safer.
Crime Stoppers has proven to be extraordinarily effective. Total results gathered from 1987 –2006 include:
- Calls Answered 1076756
- Total Charges 125054
- Total Arrests 45506
- Total Crimes Value $900,859,852
You can call Crime Stoppers to report crime anonymously with no questions asked. Similarly, sharing a crime online with Crime Stoppers is also secure. At no time do Crimes Stoppers or the Police have access to your email address; the details of the computer you are using; your whereabouts; your name; your address; or any other details about you unless you choose to provide them.
If you would like to report an identity theft or identity related crime you can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Tips
Veda Advantage suggests the following 10 step plan on how to prevent ID fraud
- Shred any paperwork such as bank and credit card statements, phone bills and gas/electricity bills that contain your personal details or account details before throwing away.
- Don’t display your complete birth date, phone number, email or home address in open online environments such as social networking sites, and change passwords regularly. Keep all personal ID items, such as student cards, passport and driver’s licence in a secure place.
- Elect the “private” option on social networking sites. Most social networking websites allow you to hide certain pieces of information to limit what others can see online – or to only make information available to close friends or family. Remember, once you put your personal details online it can be hard to remove that information, so make sure you hide what you do not want the world to see.
- Use secure transactions when banking online, and don’t open any attachments in emails that imply they are sending you to a bank’s site – type the bank’s URL directly into the computer to help ensure safe transactions.
- Practice caution when using a public computer, especially in an internet café, make sure you are using a secure server when making financial transactions, do not save your email address, and remember to log out and close all windows when leaving.
- Cut old cards across the signature and magnetic strip, and sign new cards as soon as they are received.
- Notify people when you move house make sure you update your address details with all companies that may send you mail, from banks to health insurance and phone companies.
- Check your credit file regularly if you are over the age of 16 and credit-active to make sure all information is true and correct. If something is inaccurate, someone at Veda Advantage can help. You can apply for a copy of your credit file at www.mycreditfile.com.au or by calling 1300 762 207.
- Set up an alert service such as My Veda Alert that can notify you whenever someone applies for credit in your name where the credit provider obtains a copy of your credit file, this way you can keep on top of any changes to your credit file identity.
- Contact your financial institution immediately if you find that there are transactions or suspicious activity on your credit statements. If your wallet is stolen remember to cancel club membership cards, your drivers’ and other licenses, as well as your bank and credit cards. File a police report straight away.
